Any health issues I need to know about?
Grahamstown like most of South Africa is malaria-free and enjoys a healthy climate. In the event of illness during your visit, you are advised to obtain health insurance before you arrive. Grahamstown has many medical practitioners and a hospital, and there are further specialist hospitals in Port Elizabeth.
Do I need to rent a car or take a cab to get from the airport to the hotel?
You can do so, but you may want to avail yourself of the conference airport shuttle and local transport provision whose costs are built into the registration fee. South Africa does not have an advanced public transport system, so if you are planning to do independent touring outside of WJEC, or if you stay at a safari ranch during the conference, car rental is advisable. Standard global car hire companies in South Africa include Avis, Budget, EuropeCar, Herz, etc. South African roads are of high quality, and driving is on the left-hand side.
What AV equipment do you have onsite?
Conference venues at Rhodes University all have data projection facilities and online wireless access. Legislation requires, however, that the University make a copy of your Passport or Identity Book, in order to register you on the network.
