Don't let the current high prices of airfares put you off considering attendance - we're advised they will come down notwithstanding the World Cup bookings. Late February or March is expected to be a better time to book. We're advised that Delta, Emirates and Air France will be laying on extra inventory, which may lead prices to decline.

International delegates will enter South Africa via Cape Town International or Johannesburg OR Tambo airports. Some may decide to hire a car and do a day's drive from Cape Town to Grahamstown along the Garden Route - a scenic route along the coastline. If you want to find out if anyone is wanting to link up on this drive, sharing a car or van, send us your details (via Suggestion Box on bottom left of the page), and we'll let you know of potential pals!

Most delegates will probably take a domestic flight from Cape Town or Johannesburg direct to Port Elizabeth airport. Flights from Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth are 90 minutes and Cape Town is an hour's flying time.

Grahamstown is 90 minutes away from the PE airport, and there will be shuttle services between the two cities. WJEC staff will meet you at the airport, bearing signs, and guide you to the shuttles.

Once in Grahamstown, the small size of the city means that most restaurants, museums, accommodation and conference venue sites can be easily reached through 5- to 15-minutes walks. Local transportation is also available by means of private and university providers.

We suggest that delegates delay if they have not yet booked, due to December demand for seats so as to attend the World Cup. South African Airlines has the most frequent schedule of international flights - but for some dumb reason has blocked off most of its international inventory until 5 December, while it negotiates with Fifa's business interests.

You can get decent fares, however, from Lufthansa, KLM and British Airways. From the USA, you can look at wholesale-fares which punts itself as offering discounted fares during the 2010 Cup period (please note: we have not tested its service in practice - but at the very least it should give you some prices to put to a travel agent).

It often makes financial sense to book international and domestic legs on one ticket.  A good way to get these link-ups is via star alliance Offering domestic connections are 1Time, Kulula, and SA Express, wiith flights between Port Elizabeth and other South African towns. East London is another city close to Grahamstown (2 hours drive)
